,returns with a bitter-sweet comedy on the immigrant experience. Shown at MIFF, 2009.
March 9th - 7.30 - BLESSED
(Australia - Drama - 2000) 113m
A searing, emotional drama which follows the events of a single day and night
in Melbourne, as several young people make choices which place themselves
in danger. The film then traces the same timeline focusing on their mothers.
Directed by Ana Kokkinos and featuring Deborah Lee-Furness, Miranda Otto
and William McInnes,
April 13th - 7.30 - DARLING
(UK - drama - 1965) 128m
A beautiful but amoral British girl (Julie Christie)rises from her common place
life to marry an Italian noble. Christie won the Oscar for Best Actress in this
very influential 60's film by John Schlesinger, which also features Dirk Bogarde
and Laurence Harvey.
May 11th - 7.30 - I'VE LOVED YOU SO LONG
(France – drama – 2008) 117m
After an absence of 15 years, a woman (Kristen Scott-Thomas) struggles to
interact with her family, especially her sister (Elsa Zylberstein). The past must
be dealt with.Scott Thomas gives a wonderful performance in the central role of
this profound and deeply sensitive film directed by Philippe Claudel.
June 8th - 7.30 - THE GOOD GERMAN
(U.S.– drama – 2006) 105m
Whilst in post-war Berlin to cover the Potsdam Conference, an American military journalist is drawn into a murder investigation which involves his former mistress
and his driver. Director Steven Soderbergh, consciously evokes the mood for the
"film noir" of the 40's in this haunting, enigmatic film.
George Clooney and Cate Blanchett star.
July 13th - 7.30pm - THE CONFORMIST
(Italy – drama– 1970) 111m
In 1930's Italy, a weak-willed young man strives for acceptance as a member of
the Italian fascist secret service. Bernard Bertolucci's superbly stylish direction
and stunning cinematography are features of this tense, political thriller.
August 10th - 7.30 ABOUT ELLY
(Iran - Drama - 2009) 119m
A group of friends holidaying on the Caspian sea plays matchmaker between
a divorced man and a schoolteacher, Elly. When she disappears, they contact
a web of small deceits which prove to have dire
consequences. One of the best
films to come out of Iran in recent years, this was featured at MIFF, 2009.

September 14th - 7.30 - HORSEMAN ON THE ROOF
(France - historical drama - 1995) 135m
In 1832, an Italian cavalry officer (Oliver Martinez), a member of an underground movement, trying to battle Austrian overlords while a cholera epidemic is
devastating the French countryside. Exquisite Provence locations help boost this sweeping adventure saga. Directed by Jean-Paul Rappenau (Cyrano De Bergerac) and also featuring Juliet Binoche and Gerard Depardieu.
October 12th - 7.30 -THE PAGE TURNER
(France - Drama - 2006) 85m
A young girl's chance to take up a career as a concert pianist is dashed
by the thoughtless actions of a famous woman pianist. Years later, the girl has
the chance for revenge. Denis Dercourt's subtle, psychological thriller racks up
the tension in a manner which some have compared favorably to Hitchcock.
November 9th - 7.30 - SAMSON & DELILAH
(Australia - Drama - 2009) 100m
In Australia's red centre a young aboriginal couple embark on a troubled
courtship. Warwick Thornton's impressive first feature film is a stunningly original work, perhaps the jewel in a stellar year for Australian films. Eschewing dialogue,

the story is told largely through images and sounds. Thornton's insight into
the world of present-day indigenous youths is unsentimental and hard-edged,
yet not without hope.
December 14th - 8.00 - EASY VIRTUE
(U.K. - Comedy - 2009) 97m
In the 1920's, a young Englishman (Ben Barnes) marries a glamorous American (Jessica Biel), and brings her to his ancestral home where she outrages his stuffy family. Australian Stephan Elliot (Adventures of Priscilla) gleefully mixes witty
Noel Coward repartee with music from a variety of eras in this playful, at times very funny, romp. Kristen Scott-Thomas and Colin Firth feature as Barne's parents.
